The new talent agenda

This THINKERS50 MAYO PROJECT explores what makes people tick today.

The Australian Elton Mayo (1880-1949) remains best known - if known at all - for his contribution to the Hawthorne Studies were carried out at Western Electric's Chicago plant between 1927 and 1932.  The studies offered important insights into the motivation of workers.  It was found, for example, that changes in working conditions led to increased output - even if the changes weren't obviously for the betterment of working conditions.

The Hawthorne experiments were celebrated as a major event.  Their significance lay not so much in their results and discoveries, but in the statement they made: whatever the dictates of mass production and Scientific Management, people and their motivation were critical to the success of any business; and in their legacy - the Human Relations school of thinkers which emerged in the forties and fifties.

Mayo championed the case for teamworking and for improved communications between management and the workforce.  The Hawthorne research revealed informal organizations between groups as a potentially powerful force which companies could utilize or ignore.  Such organizations have never been more important.

The new talent agenda recognizes the needs of a young (millennial) but also ageing (100 year) workforce. It combines the talents of creative entrepreneurs and disciplined managers, to build diverse teams that achieve more.
